Low Maintenance Courtyard - Terrigal

Client Requests: "we need our courtyard to look good all year round, have some lawn, be smart, low maintenance as we are interstate regularly and shall not be here to look after. Our budget $5 - $10k.."

Tough call to desire a courtyard garden and lawn to look good all time when 'no body home' most of the time plus the coastal courtyard faced south, in shade most of the day, not favourable for establishing a lawn so client favoured an artificial grass rather than buffalo, green all year round and no mowing required. Also to improve look of existing concrete, light coloured paver's selected. A similar coloured water feature installed and mould reduced with sealing. Shade plants without many small leaves planted keeps leaf drop to a minimum and simple clean lines ...

"As our front yard is now complete, we wish to thank Warren and his team At Birdwood Landscape Design for our amazing garden. From your professional and understanding acceptance of our requests, to the informative two concept sketch options, we knew we had chosen wisely. We do not understate that our new front yard is beyond our imaginings visually and makes full use of available space and aspect. All products used and construction elements were of the highest order and the project was completed in a timely way. We are thrilled with the outcome! You really exceeded. Our expectations at every level throughout the process and your attention to detail was incredible. It was a pleasure to have the guys around and we would whole heartedly recommend Birdwood Landscape Design to everyone!"

Do It Yourself Home Garden - Kariong

Client Brief: "We need ideas for a makeover starting with our front yard, to be more appealing"

Dave and Stacy our good friend's have access to a mixture of rocks (not great ones) and would like to do all work themselves to save costs. Warren provided a rough concept sketch, some advice on set out, garden preparation, soil mix, low stone walls, mulch, pruning and supplied and placed plants for the family to install. I believe Dave, Stacy and kids have done a great job at their own pace and budget.

"We found Warren from BLD to be most helpful in assisting us with landscaping around our home. We were able to use Warrens' unique talents for visualising a design, blending existing plants with new plants, and take on the bulk of the work ourselves. For the cost of a 'Birdwood informal consultation visit', we were able to achieve a professional looking gardens at a DIY price. We are very happy with the outcome of stage one and the garden receives lots of compliments nearly three years on."

Coastal Weekender - Patonga

Client Requests: "our weekender needs to be a nice place to visit and relax"

The challenge started with finding plenty of ‘old timers’ entangled rubbish buried on the site. Sandy nature allows the ground to dry out instantly and there is not going to be someone there to water an investment in plants and lawn after handover. Attempting to minimize costs, rather than removing this rubbish, let it remain and installation a large quantity of organic garden mix over the entire property and an automatic irrigation system off existing bore works great looking after lawn and plants. Generous plantings of hardy trees, shrubs and grasses created the dense seclusion. Recycling of existing materials, salt textured concrete and Buffalo lawn softens the end result. In addition BLD sought after and managed the sail, wheelchair access, timber carport, studio construction, plumber and painters.

"I wanted to thankyou for the remarkable creation you have made for our weekender garden, turning what was pretty ordinary into a mini paradise. We really appreciate the time, effort and care that you have put in the project and would happily recommend you to any one else seeking a lifestyle make – over"
Jon (Hon. Jc.) Patonga / Central Coast (under $40k)

Lakeside Home - Berkeley vale

Client Requests: "A smart entertaining area, link to the pool area to home, sunbaking area and secluded’ Mums retreat’. Fix drainage problems due to flooding while you’re at it"

Our design involved some low radial steps of Himalayan Sandstone and contrasting Merbau hardwood decking gently raising to the pool level. Areas tied together with elevated rendered planters above existing concrete and consist of lush plantings. Screen planting’s along boundaries to enhance privacy. Retreat tucked away in a protected cove of Bamboo and clients Buddha figure. Eliminated drainage problems by installing extensive subsoil and surface drainage. Additional decks, some pool renovation and black pool fence finished off the yard.

"Warren has the ability to really listen to what you want to achieve and turn it into reality. He is also very flexible, as we changed our minds again and again, many an evening was spent at our place going through suggestions. I can’t recommend him highly enough, if you are looking for someone with vision, tempered with practicality and will be proactive in his approach and is not scared of disagreeing with your ideas for the benefit of the overall result and who follows up after the job is complete"

Challenging Home - Collaroy Heights

Client Requests: "we would like to turn our ugly concrete yard into something inviting"

The bulk of yard is concrete and no access for machinery to remove and costly if removed by hand plus tip fees. We decided leaving the bulk of concrete in place, cut holes in slabs, install drainage over the entire slab and build up levels to a new long timber retaining wall along the boundary. On-site plants also transplanted prior to works and reinstalled into the completed landscape to screen ugly pool wall. Installation of new water tank's for a automated irrigation drip system hidden beneath lawn and garden areas ensured strong growth. Due to no access to rear yard, the poly tanks where man handled over a neighbours fence, rolled across their yard and then lifted over our fence, floated across the new pool into the new yard. It was all hands on deck utilising on looking tradesman on site and lucky great neighbours to make it all possible. Some quality hardwood pool decking and tiling completely compliment the landscaping.

"We would like to thank Birdwood for transforming the rear of our property from just a backyard into an eye appealing area both in design and choice of planting and lawns. We would recommend this company to any prospective clients and we get nothing but praise from family and friends"
John & June - Collaroy / Sydney (under $50 k.)

Hillside Home - Kariong

home garden challenge – "this place has potential"?
Aim : To do everything once only including control the excessive water entering rear of property, masses of greenery for privacy, easier access for vehicles, parking, a great backyard for family and friends.

A large renovation with neat gardens at front utilising mainly exotic plantings. Structure from hedging to achieve privacy and soften major masonry retaining walls whilst retaining water views. An up lit Chinese Elm creates an beautiful overhanging canopy across the driveway, produces some character and interest from street view. The rear yard totally contrasting style, focusing on establishing different areas utilising native species and creating some intimacy. A 'love shack' BBQ area built from recycled bits and pieces including old weathered timber beams, rusty corrugated tin roof with burgundy grape vine draping from and a drip system on top. All lit with wood fire and candle power only. A wine barrel, stacked woodpile wall, curving aged sandstone walls and native grasses. Area seems larger with a dominant stand of vertically lit the white trunks of spotted gum trees that tower over, with abundant bird life enjoying. Splashes of colour and age added from a feature up lit 35yr old burgundy weeping maple and other autumn coloured species. Cohesiveness between front and back yards kept utilising the same drifts of ground covers and curved flowing lines throughout. All combined successfully create that ease within an urban area for a family to grow up and entertain as required.

Veterinary Hospital - Erina Heights

Client Brief: "create a welcoming feeling to the building. Lawn and gardens and a special area for clients and their pets to visit and relax. Select which of the existing trees and shrubs to retain for appearance and privacy..."

A feature burgundy Weeping Maple with graceful branching habit, softens the scene at the main entry of building. Repetition of shapes throughout gardens provide cohesiveness including hedging. Gardens watered with automated irrigation from rainwater tank. Light decomposed granite path meanders to the feature 'Circle of Life' dry pack stone wall. Here clients may stroll with their pets to this beautiful elevated resting place.

"Warren designed & managed our project from initial concept to completion. Design aspects of colour, texture & scale were all considered in selection of plants & placement of garden beds, lawns & pathways to suit a commercial space. It was important for us to create an outdoor area for our clients & their pets to enjoy & relax. Our ‘Circle of Life’ stone feature (our seating area) provides a ‘haven’ of calmness"
Carolyn & Michael - Erina Heights Veterinary Hospital (under $70k)

Secluded Acres - Forster

Client Requests: "low maintenance gardens, relaxed almost messy, lots of movement, soft lines nothing rigid and minimal colour"

The existing straight driveway to the residence was realigned with a very gentle curve and edged with overhanging evergreen trees both framing and enhancing your arrival to the residence. Adding hardwood timber posts and front gates compliment the feature hardwood timber in the home. Earthy coloured road base was compacted to follow gentle curves throughout the property including informal car park areas. Texture and colour of the natural materials was carried throughout the gardens with clumps of large feature rocks. Plant palette is a blend of native grasses, shrubs and trees to ground the prominent home and resort style pool. The grey hues of the corrugated iron are combined with groups of similar coloured fruiting Olive trees and Coastal Rosemary. Interest added to the outskirts of paddocks with clumps of specimen trees including Claret Ash, Chinese Tallowood and Robinias. A graceful Chinese Elm to soften shed, provide some summer shade and a tree that may be climbed. An area of low significance or use now has a smart avenue of Manchurian Pears following the contours across the property. One of the simplest and rewarding aspects of the project involved placing a significant uplight to an existing large old gum tree in the paddock', something mother nature provided. At night the tree is a dramatic statement that maybe viewed and enjoyed from anywhere on the property. With any projects away from home we meet and speak with a select few local landscapers go through the scope and engage the best suited contractor to work with our team to complete our design. Both crews worked together without any hiccups and their local knowledge is invaluable when constructing, it allows us to adjust elements throughout the installation of landscaping.

'Hollyridge' Acreage Mount Wilson - Blue Mountains

Client Requests: "any landscaping work to blend in harmoniously with existing established grounds, no work to appear new. We require a entertaining area, somewhere to enjoy a wine and lunch with our friends"

After completion of landscaping at our client's Elizabeth and Joe's immaculate residence in Pymble with manicured gardens, grass tennis court and expansive wine cellar, we where then asked if interested to look at some landscaping at 'the weekender' 'Absolutely' our reply. So we visited, enjoyed a cuppa and meandered over the elevated spectacular 100 acres, with a tastefully renovated cottage with verandah over looking the Blue Mountains it was evident that our standards need to be of the highest, to compliment the nearby beautiful 1800's Heritage Garden Village areas. During wall construction many heavy tons of cold basalt rocks are gathered from over the property with a track machine to minimise damage to the property. This dense volcanic rock was almost impossible to shape so the wall and pier construction took some perseverance in finding the right rock for each spot. A semi trailer load of old brick commons brought in and blend softly with existing lawns and existing gardens. Whilst we had machinery on site that handled the icy conditions, the existing dam was cleaned out and re contoured with some flowing lines. This maximised the float age costs to such an isolated property.

When Warren studied his associate diploma in landscape design in 1986, this Mount Wilson Heritage Garden Village was one of the treasured spots to visit, study and enjoy.
Was a pleasure to leave some design, construction and great to leave happy client's Elizabeth and Joe amongst the mist, fog and ice. (under 50K)
